The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that starting in 2028, a stunt category will be added. The first award will be presented at the 100th Oscars ceremony.
After years of efforts to include the category in the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed that the 2028 Oscars will feature an award for stunt performers.
The category, titled Stunt Design, will be presented for the first time at the 100th edition of the Academy Awards.
Academy President Janet Yang and CEO Bill Kramer commented on the importance of stunt professionals in film productions.
“Since the earliest days of cinema, stunt design has been a fundamental part of filmmaking,” they stated.
“We are proud to honor the groundbreaking work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them on their dedication and commitment in achieving this historic milestone,” they added.

The stunt community in Hollywood has been gaining increasing recognition, and the expectation is that their work will be even more valued with this new Oscar category.
Tom Cruise, known for his stunts in the “Mission: Impossible” series, director David Leitch, and other professionals have expressed support for the creation of the category.
Despite the announcement, it is still unclear who will receive the Stunt Design award — whether it will go to stunt coordinators or the entire team involved in the scene.
“The eligibility and voting rules for the inaugural award will be announced in 2027, along with the full regulations for the 100th Oscars,” the Academy stated.
